Yesterday, Friday, October 5 TH, 2010, I had the chance to meet animation artist David Weidman at the opening of his art show at The Animation Guild’s Gallery 839. The Cheerful ninety-one animation artist veteran signed my copy of his book “The Whimsical Works of David Weidman.” David worked as a background painter in the animation world of the 50s and 60s, painting backgrounds for Hanna-Barbera Studios and UPA’s Mr. Magoo, Gerald Mc. Boing Boing, Jay Ward’s Crusader Rabbit, and many others.The exhibition was of his original vintage serigraphs created during the 1960’s and 1970’s. David created his works directly on the screen, not using any intermediary mediums.  The exhibit features the evolution of his use of the medium from the early works that resemble fanciful animation backgrounds to the layered later works that show off the medium to best advantage. Beautiful artwork indeed! Besides, is not every day that you meet a veteran from the old days of UPA’s Mr. Magoo and Gerald Mc. Boin Boing! The exhibition will be on display until October 26 at The Animation Guild’s Gallery 839, 1105 N. Hollywood Way in Burbank, California.
